Wall & Standing Mirrors
Wall & Standing Mirrors
A good mirror earns its place the way a good piece of furniture does; useful, yes, but never only that. The right one opens up a room, pulls in light, and quietly does half the styling for you.
- Wall mirrors: Hang one near the entryway or above a console to bounce the lighting and make a tight space feel bigger, the easiest way to add light without adding a lamp.
- Floor mirrors: These earn their keep in a bedroom or living room, giving you a full-length view before you head out and real presence in a bare corner.
Shapes and frame finishes
The frame is what ties a mirror to the rest of the room, so the finish can match your furniture instead of fighting it. Start with the material:
- Wood: Warm and natural, easy against timber furniture and softer palettes.
- Stainless steel: Sleek and modern, at home in a contemporary space.
- Resin: Versatile and light, moulded into shapes other materials can't manage.
- PU: A clean, durable finish that holds its look with little upkeep.
- Iron: Slim and structural, for a more industrial or pared-back frame.
- Travertine: Natural stone with real texture, for a frame that stands out.
Then the shape, which changes how the mirror works in the room:
- Arched or round: Softens a room full of straight edges and draws in a little more light.
- Rectangular or oval: The classic head-to-toe shapes, and the ones that suit a gallery wall.
FAQ
When choosing a mirror for a small apartment, consider the size and shape of your home. In a HDB or condo, a compact wall mirror placed to catch a window does more for the sense of space than a large one competing for floor room.
For a living room, choose a mirror around 90 to 160cm tall above a console or sideboard, roughly two-thirds its width. In a bedroom, a full-length mirror between 120 and 160cm gives you a true head-to-toe reflection without overwhelming a smaller room. A guest room can work with something more modest, 60 to 90cm, hung above a dresser or leaned in a corner.
Look at the frame material first, wood, iron, stainless steel, travertine and resin all hold up differently over time, so buy one that matches how the room gets used. A full-length mirror in Singapore should also have a proper mirror backing to resist humidity, not just a thin coat of silvering. Every one of ours ships with hooks and an anti-slip kit, so it stays stable whether mounted or leaning.
- Tempered glass over a proper backing: The reflection stays true with no warping or distortion, and the glass is tougher and safer than standard mirror glass, which matters for the biggest piece of glass in the room.
- A finish and size for every room: Frames from warm wood to sleek steel, and sizes from a compact 41cm to a full-length 160cm, so there's one to suit your style and the wall it's going on.
- Frames built for the climate: Finishes chosen to hold up against Singapore's humidity, so the frame keeps its shape and finish instead of warping or corroding over the years.
- Ready to hang out of the box: Every mirror ships with hooks and an anti-slip kit, so there's no separate trip to the hardware store, whether you're wall-mounting it or leaning it on tile or parquet.
Getting the size right is mostly a matter of proportion, and a few simple measurements take the guesswork out of it:
- Match the width to the furniture: Keep the mirror about two-thirds the width of whatever sits beneath it, a console, dresser, or coffee table, so it anchors the piece without overhanging it.
- Leave breathing room above: Hang it so there's roughly 10 to 20cm between the top of the furniture and the base of the mirror, close enough to read as a pair, not so close they crowd.
- Set the centre at eye level: Position the middle of the mirror around 150 to 160cm from the floor, which is average eye height, so it works for actually checking your reflection, not just for show.
- Size up for full-length: For a genuine head-to-toe mirror in a bedroom or hallway, go taller, around 140cm and up, and lean or mount it flat against the wall.
- Size down over a sideboard: For a decorative piece above a sideboard, a smaller mirror around 41 to 80cm sits in proportion without dominating the wall.
A few things make the difference between a mirror that sits securely for years and one that works loose:
- Hang it at the right height: Set the centre of the mirror around 144 to 165cm from the floor for a standard hang, adjusting up or down for any furniture beneath it.
- Use the right fixing for the wall: Most HDB walls are solid concrete or masonry partitions, so a masonry screw or proper wall anchor holds far better than an adhesive strip, which tends to give way over time. Wall mirrors usually ship with hooks and an anti-slip kit for this reason.
- Secure a floor mirror properly: On tiled or parquet flooring, a leaning mirror can slide or tip, so use the anti-tip strap or bracket to give it a stable base, especially in a home with kids or pets.
Humidity here means condensation creeps onto glass, especially near a bathroom or laundry area. A little habit keeps it clear:
- Wipe it down after steam: Dry the surface after a shower or a wash, before the condensation dries into streaks and spots.
- Let the air move behind it: Leave a few centimetres of clearance behind the frame so air can circulate, which stops moisture getting trapped against the wall and the backing.
