Bar & Liquor Cabinets
A bar cabinet can be a valuable addition to any home bar setup, offering several benefits beyond simple storage. Here's why you might consider incorporating one into your space:
- Organized Storage: Bar cabinets provide designated spaces for your liquor collection, barware, and cocktail-making tools. This keeps everything neatly organized and dust-free, making it easier to find what you need when crafting drinks.
- Improved Functionality: By freeing up counter space, a bar cabinet allows you to create a dedicated area for mixing drinks. This can improve your workflow and make the bartending process more efficient.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Bar cabinets come in a variety of styles and materials, from classic wood to modern glass. They can add a touch of sophistication and elegance to your home bar area, complementing your existing décor.
- Space Efficiency: Depending on the design, some bar cabinets offer additional features like built-in shelves, drawers, or hidden compartments. This allows you to maximize storage space without sacrificing aesthetics.
- Protection: A closed cabinet can help protect your liquor collection from dust and light exposure, which can be detrimental to some spirits over time.
Overall, a bar cabinet is a practical and stylish upgrade for any home bar. It promotes organization, functionality, and aesthetics, making your home bartending experience more enjoyable.
FAQ
A cellarete is a type of bar cabinet, although it is the more traditional term for cellaret and refers to a smaller cabinet (sometimes with a lock) designer for storing and serving alcoholic beverages. Bar cabinet is the most general term that encompasses a wider range of styles and sizes.
The depth of your bar cabinet depends on a few considerations:
- Storing Bottles: If you plan on storing mostly standard liquor bottles (around 30 centimetres tall), a depth of 56-61 centimetres should suffice.
- Large Bottles or Barware: If you have taller bottles like magnums or oversized barware, consider a depth of 61-76 centimetres.
- Accessibility: Deeper cabinets might require reaching further back to access items in the rear. If this is a concern, a shallower cabinet with good organization might be better.
- Countertop Overhang: If your bar cabinet has a countertop, consider the depth in relation to the overhang for comfortable seating.
Here's a general recommendation:
- For a space-saving option with limited storage needs, a 41-51 centimetre depth might work.
- For most home bars with a good variety of liquors and barware, a 56-61 centimetre depth is a good balance.
- If you have a large collection or prioritize extensive storage, consider a 61-76 centimetre depth cabinet.
Ultimately, the best depth for your bar cabinet depends on your specific needs and preferences. Consider the factors mentioned above to make an informed decision.
Bar cabinets can be suitable for storing some wine, but they may not be ideal for long-term or serious wine storage. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons to help you decide:
Pros of Using a Bar Cabinet for Wine:
- Convenience: Bar cabinets are readily accessible and can be a great way to keep your favorite wines on hand for easy access when entertaining or enjoying a casual drink.
- Aesthetics: Many bar cabinets come in stylish designs that can complement your décor and showcase your wine collection.
- Temperature (for some): If your bar cabinet is located in a cool, dark area with consistent temperature, it might be suitable for storing wines you plan to drink within a few weeks or months.
Cons of Using a Bar Cabinet for Wine:
- Temperature Fluctuations: Most bar cabinets are not temperature controlled. Wine needs to be stored at a cool, consistent temperature (ideally around 55°F) for optimal aging and preservation. Bar cabinets, especially if located near heat sources or exposed to sunlight, can experience temperature fluctuations that harm wine.
- Light Exposure: Many bar cabinets have transparent doors or are placed in well-lit areas. Excessive light exposure can degrade wine quality, especially for white wines and sparkling wines.
- Humidity: Wine cabinets often maintain a specific level of humidity, which is important for keeping corks from drying out. Bar cabinets typically don't have humidity control.
- Wine Storage Needs: If you are a casual wine drinker and plan to consume the wine within a few weeks or months, a bar cabinet might suffice.
- Serious Wine Collectors: For long-term wine storage or for serious wine collectors, a dedicated wine refrigerator or wine cooler is a much better option, as it provides the consistent temperature, darkness, and humidity control that wine needs to age properly.
